Sophie was very sad when her pet cuckoo bird disappeared. She missed its cheerful song and kept looking at the empty place near her window. Her father said, “Maybe we should get you another bird.” But Sophie’s mother smiled gently. “Remember, that cuckoo appeared at our window like magic. Perhaps it came from somewhere special.”
Sophie liked to imagine that her little friend had come from a fairyland. One day, her father had a beautiful clock made to look just like the cuckoo. Then he secretly asked a magician to give the clock a little magic. That night, while Sophie was asleep, her father hung the clock in her room.
The next morning... A tiny cuckoo popped out of the clock and began singing Sophie’s favourite song. Sophie clapped with delight. From then on, every hour, the magical cuckoo sang to her, and Sophie felt as if her old friend was still close by.
