Leo Finds His Roar

A tiny lion cub named Leo wakes up lost and frightened on a big city street, where his roar comes out as only a squeak. With the help of a kind boy named Milo, and one brave rescue, Leo discovers that being brave means helping even when your legs are shaking.

Once upon a time, in a big, busy city full of tall buildings and yellow taxis, a tiny lion cub named Leo woke up far from home.

He didn't quite know how he'd got there. One moment he was napping in the sunny meadow at the city zoo. The next, he was blinking at the bright lights of Happy Street.

Everything was so big. The buildings reached up to the clouds. The taxis honked. People hurried past on tall, busy legs.

Leo opened his mouth to roar for help. But all that came out was a tiny squeak. "Meep."

Poor Leo. He felt very small, and very scared.

He curled up beside a flower pot and tried to be brave. But being brave is hard when you feel all alone.

Then he heard a gentle voice. "Well, hello there."

Leo looked up. A kind boy with a big backpack was kneeling beside him. His name was Milo.

"You look a little lost," Milo said softly. "Don't worry. I'll stay with you."

Milo didn't shout, and he didn't grab. He simply sat down on the warm sidewalk, right next to Leo, and waited.

Slowly, Leo stopped shaking.

Milo shared his lunch, a piece of bread and a slice of apple. Leo nibbled. It was the best apple he had ever tasted, because it came with a friend.

"I know what will cheer you up," Milo said. He pulled out a box of chalk.

Right there on the sidewalk, he drew a big, bright lion with a golden mane. Beside it, he drew a little red heart.

"That's you," said Milo. "Brave and bright."

Leo looked at the chalk lion. It looked so strong. So brave. Not scared at all.

"I wish I were brave like that," Leo thought.

Just then, he heard another sound. A soft, frightened whimper.

A tiny kitten had climbed too high up a wobbly fence and couldn't get down. It mewed, scared, just the way Leo had felt.

Milo reached up, but the fence was too high, even for him.

Leo's heart went thump. He was scared. The fence was tall and the street was loud.

But the kitten needed help. And Milo believed in him.

Leo remembered the chalk lion, brave and bright.

He took a deep breath.

Then, one paw at a time, Leo climbed. Up the crates. Up the fence. His legs shook the whole way, but he kept going.

At the top, he gently nudged the kitten onto his back and carried it down, slow and careful, all the way to the ground.

The kitten purred and nuzzled him. Milo cheered.

And Leo felt something warm and new inside him.

He opened his mouth, and this time, out came a real roar. A gentle, happy roar. "Roar!"

Not scary. Just brave.

Milo laughed and gave him a big hug. "I knew you had it in you."

From then on, the city didn't feel so big or so frightening. Because Leo had learned something important. Being brave doesn't mean you are never scared. It means you help, even when your legs are shaking.

As the sun set behind the tall buildings and the first stars twinkled over Happy Street, Milo walked Leo all the way back to the zoo gate, where his mama lion was waiting.

"Goodnight, brave little Leo," Milo whispered.

Leo gave one last gentle roar, a soft and sleepy one, and curled up warm and safe.

And little one, whenever something feels too big, or too loud, or too scary, remember Leo.

You are braver than you know. And your roar is in there, waiting.

Now close your eyes, take a cozy breath, and dream of all the brave and kind things you'll do tomorrow.

Goodnight, little dreamer.
