The birds, baboons, lion, and elephants of the forest argue about who is the greatest, and each one boasts about what it does best. Oliver, a quiet and wise owl, listens until the end. Then he asks one simple question that makes them think about the forest that gives them all food, shade, and safety. This short, gentle animal tale is about humility and being thankful for the world around us.

One day, the animals and birds of the forest began arguing about who was the greatest. The birds chirped, “We are the best because we sing beautiful songs!” The baboons laughed. “We carry news from one side of the forest to the other!” The lion growled, “I am the king of the forest!”

The elephants trumpeted, “We are strong and mighty, and we do not harm others for our meals!” All this time, a wise owl named Oliver sat quietly on a branch and listened. At last, he said, “You are all proud of what you can do. But tell me... do any of you give food, homes, and shelter to so many others?”

The animals became silent. Oliver looked around at the trees, rivers, plants, and open land. “The forest gives all of us a home. It gives us food, shade, and safety. So none of us is greater than the forest itself.” The animals looked at one another and understood. Then they stopped arguing and quietly went on their way.
